IN Focus First Carmel Frequently Asked Questions
Does IN Focus First accept insurance?
IN Focus First is an out-of-network provider and does not bill insurance directly. Patients pay at the time of service and receive a superbill — an itemized receipt with the diagnostic and procedure codes required to submit a claim to your insurance provider for potential reimbursement. HSA and FSA cards are accepted. Many patients with PPO plans receive partial reimbursement for out-of-network psychiatric services. If you have an HMO plan, out-of-network reimbursement is typically not available.
Why don’t you accept insurance?
Insurance companies mandate the “15-minute medication check” model to maximize volume. I view this as clinically dangerous. When adjusting neurochemistry, 15 minutes is insufficient to ensure patient safety or diagnostic accuracy. By refusing insurance, I retain the autonomy to spend 60+ minutes with you, ensuring we are treating the root cause rather than just stabilizing symptoms. Although we do not accept insurance for appointments, we do provide a superbill.
Can a psychiatric nurse practitioner prescribe ADHD medication?
In Indiana, a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) can prescribe ADHD medication, including controlled substances like Adderall, Vyvanse, and non-stimulant medication like Strattera. Jessica Walsh, PMHNP is a board-certified psychiatric nurse practitioner at IN Focus First with specialized training in ADHD and psychopharmacology. You do not need to see a psychiatrist or physician to receive an ADHD diagnosis and prescription in Indiana.
What is the difference between a psychiatrist and a psychiatric nurse practitioner?
A psychiatric nurse practitioner (PMHNP) and a psychiatrist both diagnose mental health conditions and prescribe psychiatric medication, but they differ in training pathway — psychiatrists complete medical school and a residency, while PMHNPs complete graduate nursing school and a psychiatric specialty certification. In Indiana, PMHNPs practice independently with full prescriptive authority, including for controlled substances. At IN Focus First, care is led by Jessica Walsh, PMHNP-BC, with medical oversight from Dr Olaniyi Osuntokun, MD, a double board-certified psychiatrist and neurologist serving as Medical Director.
How soon can I get an appointment?
IN Focus First offers psychiatric appointments as early as the next business day, with same-week availability for most new patients. Appointments are booked online and include evening slots Monday through Friday from 9:30 AM to 8:00 PM. Check current availability here.
Is IN Focus First accepting new patients?
Yes, we are currently accepting new patients. We offer same-week appointments for both online and in-person appointments. You can schedule online or call our Carmel office at 317-886-8118
What is the benefit of “Metabolic Psychiatry” for treatment-resistant cases?
Many mental health symptoms are fueled by body system dysfunction or gut-brain inflammation. By addressing your metabolic health from an integrative perspective, we treat the biological environment of the brain, providing relief for patients who haven’t found success with standard medications alone.
